Shelly Zigbee Operated Door/Window Sensor White Setup Guide
Shelly Zigbee Operated Door/Window Sensor White - Setup Guide
Tools required:
- Clean, dry cloth for surface preparation
- Isopropyl alcohol or mild cleaner (optional, for cleaning mounting surfaces)
- Small flat-head tool or coin (for opening the battery compartment, if required)
- Pencil or marker (optional, for marking mounting positions)
Applications required:
- A Zigbee 3.0 compatible hub or gateway (for example Home Assistant with a Zigbee coordinator, Shelly Smart Control, or Amazon Echo 4th generation or later with built-in Zigbee)
- The companion application for your chosen hub (for example Shelly Smart Control app, Home Assistant app, or Amazon Alexa app)
- A smartphone or tablet running iOS or Android with the relevant app installed
- An active Wi-Fi network for your hub (the sensor itself uses Zigbee, not Wi-Fi)
Step-by-step setup:
- Unbox and inspect: Remove the sensor, magnetic contact piece, adhesive mounting pads and quick start guide from the packaging. Confirm all items are present and undamaged.
- Activate the battery: The CR2032 battery is pre-installed. If a plastic pull-tab is present in the battery compartment, remove it to activate the sensor. If no tab is present, open the battery compartment using a small flat-head tool or coin, confirm the CR2032 is seated correctly with the positive side facing up, and close the compartment.
- Prepare your Zigbee hub: Ensure your Zigbee hub or gateway is powered on, connected to your network, and operating normally. Confirm it supports Zigbee 3.0 devices.
- Install the hub application: Download and install the appropriate app for your hub on your smartphone or tablet. Sign in or create an account if required, and make sure the hub is added to the app and reachable.
- Put the hub into pairing mode: Within your hub's app, navigate to the option for adding a new Zigbee device or accessory. Start the pairing or inclusion process so the hub begins searching for nearby Zigbee devices.
- Put the sensor into pairing mode: Locate the pairing button on the sensor (refer to the quick start guide for its exact position). Press and hold the button until the indicator LED begins flashing, which indicates the sensor is broadcasting and ready to be paired. Keep the sensor close to the hub during this step.
- Complete pairing: Wait for the hub to detect the sensor. Once discovered, follow the on-screen prompts in the app to add the device, give it a recognisable name (for example Front Door Sensor), and assign it to a room or area.
- Test detection before mounting: Hold the sensor and magnet together, then separate them. Confirm in the app that the state changes between closed and open. This verifies correct pairing and reporting before you commit to a mounting location.
- Choose a mounting location: Identify a suitable position on the door or window frame for the sensor body, and a corresponding position on the moving part (door or window) for the magnet. The two pieces must align closely when the door or window is closed, with a gap no greater than 20mm.
- Prepare the surfaces: Wipe both mounting surfaces with a clean, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a little isopropyl alcohol or mild cleaner and allow the surface to dry fully. Good surface preparation is essential for the adhesive pads to bond reliably.
- Mount the sensor body: Peel the backing from one of the adhesive pads and apply it to the rear of the sensor. Press the sensor firmly into position on the fixed frame, ensuring it is straight and that the alignment markings face the magnet side.
- Mount the magnet: Apply an adhesive pad to the rear of the magnetic contact piece. Position it on the moving part so that, when the door or window is closed, the magnet sits directly alongside the sensor with the alignment marks matching. Press firmly to secure.
- Final functional test: Open and close the door or window several times and confirm the app reports the correct state changes each time. If the state does not update, check the alignment of the magnet, reduce the gap if possible, and re-test.
- Configure automations: Within your hub's app, create the automations you require, such as turning on lights when a door opens, sending notifications if a window opens while you are away, or integrating the sensor into a security routine.
- Ongoing maintenance: Battery life is typically up to 2 years from the CR2032 cell. Monitor the battery status within the app and replace the cell when low. The sensor is rated IP20 and is intended for indoor use only, within an operating temperature range of -10°C to 40°C.
Note: This product is a low-voltage, battery-powered device and does not involve mains wiring. No electrician is required for installation.
