Shelly Wave Motion Long Range Motion Detector

  • Tools required:
    • Small Phillips screwdriver (for battery cover and mounting bracket)
    • Drill and masonry/wood bit (only if mounting to solid walls or ceilings)
    • Pencil for marking mounting positions
    • Spirit level (optional, for accurate alignment)
    • Step ladder (if ceiling or high-wall mounting)
  • Applications:
    • A Z-Wave certified controller or hub (for example Home Assistant with a Z-Wave stick, Fibaro, Homey, or another Z-Wave gateway)
    • The companion app or web interface for your chosen Z-Wave controller
    • Optional: Z-Wave JS UI or similar tool for advanced parameter configuration

Step 1: Unbox and inspect

  • Remove the Shelly Wave Motion Long Range Motion Detector, the CR123A battery, the mounting bracket, screws, and quick start guide from the packaging.
  • Check that all items are present and undamaged before proceeding.

Step 2: Insert the battery

  • Open the sensor housing by carefully separating the front cover from the rear/mounting plate, following the direction indicated in the quick start guide.
  • Insert the supplied CR123A battery, observing the correct polarity marked inside the battery compartment.
  • Close the housing securely. The device will power on and briefly indicate readiness via its LED.

Step 3: Prepare your Z-Wave controller

  • Ensure your Z-Wave hub or controller is powered on, connected to your network, and updated to the latest firmware.
  • Open the controller's app or web interface and navigate to the section for adding a new Z-Wave device (commonly labelled Add Device, Include Node, or Inclusion).
  • Place the controller into inclusion mode. If your controller supports S2 secure inclusion, keep the DSK/QR code from the device or its packaging to hand.

Step 4: Include the sensor into the Z-Wave network

  • Bring the motion detector within close range of your Z-Wave controller for the pairing process (you can move it to its final location afterwards).
  • Trigger inclusion on the sensor as described in the quick start guide (typically a short press of the inclusion button located inside or on the device).
  • If prompted, scan or enter the S2 DSK/QR code to complete secure inclusion.
  • Wait for the controller to confirm that the device has been added successfully. The node should now appear in your device list.

Step 5: Test detection before mounting

  • With the sensor still near your final location, walk across its field of view to confirm motion is detected and reported to the controller.
  • Check that motion, tamper, and battery status updates are all being received.

Step 6: Mount the sensor

  • Choose a location that provides a clear line of sight across the area to be monitored, avoiding direct sunlight, heat sources, and reflective surfaces that could cause false triggers.
  • The sensor offers up to 12 metres detection range with a 100° horizontal detection angle; position accordingly for full coverage.
  • Hold the mounting bracket in place, mark the screw positions with a pencil, and use a spirit level if precise alignment is required.
  • Drill pilot holes if necessary, then secure the bracket using the supplied screws.
  • Clip or twist the sensor onto the bracket following the orientation shown in the quick start guide.

Step 7: Configure parameters

  • In your Z-Wave controller, open the sensor's configuration or parameters page.
  • Adjust sensitivity to suit the environment - lower values reduce false triggers in busy areas, higher values improve detection of subtle movement.
  • Set the motion re-trigger interval (the cool-down period before another motion event can be reported) to match your automation needs.
  • Enable or disable additional reports such as tamper, temperature (if exposed by the device), and low-battery notifications as required.

Step 8: Create automations

  • Use your controller or hub to build automations that respond to motion events, for example switching on lights, activating a security scene, or sending notifications.
  • Test each automation by triggering motion and confirming the expected response.

Step 9: Ongoing maintenance

  • Battery life is up to 2 years under typical usage. Monitor the battery status report and replace the CR123A cell when low.
  • Keep the sensor lens clean and unobstructed for reliable performance.
  • The device is rated IP20 and is intended for indoor use only; do not install in wet or exposed outdoor environments.
  • Operate within the specified temperature range of 0°C to 40°C.

Note: This device is battery powered and does not require mains wiring, so no electrical work is required.
