Shelly Presence Gen4 Advanced Motion & Presence Detector (White) - Setup Guide

Tools required:

  • Drill with a suitable bit (only if wall or ceiling mounting)
  • Screwdriver (for the supplied mounting screws)
  • Pencil for marking mounting points
  • Spirit level (optional, for straight alignment)
  • USB-C 5V DC power adapter (1A, not included)

Applications required:

  • A 2.4GHz WiFi network with the SSID and password to hand

Step-by-step setup:

  • Step 1 - Unbox and inspect: Remove the Shelly Presence Gen4 unit, USB-C cable, mounting bracket, screws, and quick start guide from the packaging. Check all components are present and undamaged.
  • Step 2 - Download the app: Install the Shelly Smart Control app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Create a Shelly Cloud account, or sign in if you already have one.
  • Step 3 - Choose a mounting location: Select a wall or ceiling position that offers a clear line of sight to the area you wish to monitor. The detection range is up to 5 metres with a 120° horizontal angle. Avoid placing the unit near heat sources, air vents, or directly facing windows, as these may affect detection accuracy.
  • Step 4 - Power the device: Connect the supplied USB-C cable to the detector and plug the other end into a 5V DC USB power adapter (1A required, not included). The device will power on automatically. As this is a low-voltage USB-powered device, no electrical wiring is required.
  • Step 5 - Add the device in the app: Open the Shelly Smart Control app and tap the option to add a new device. Follow the on-screen prompts to scan for nearby Shelly devices. The Presence Gen4 will broadcast its own temporary WiFi access point during initial setup.
  • Step 6 - Connect to WiFi: When prompted, select your 2.4GHz WiFi network and enter the password. The detector does not support 5GHz networks. Wait for the device to connect; the app will confirm once it has joined your network successfully.
  • Step 7 - Assign a name and room: Within the app, give the detector a meaningful name (for example, Hallway Presence) and assign it to a room for easier organisation.
  • Step 8 - Configure detection settings: Open the device settings in the app to adjust:
    • PIR motion sensitivity
    • Millimetre-wave radar sensitivity for stationary presence and micro-movements
    • Custom detection zones to exclude unwanted areas
    • Lux threshold using the built-in ambient light sensor
    • Hold time before the device reports an area as unoccupied
  • Step 9 - Test detection: Walk through the monitored area and observe the live status in the app to confirm motion is registered. Then remain still within the zone to verify the radar detects stationary presence. Fine-tune the sensitivity if required.
  • Step 10 - Mount the device: Once you are satisfied with positioning, use the supplied bracket and screws to secure the detector to the wall or ceiling. Mark the screw positions with a pencil, drill pilot holes if needed, fit the bracket, and clip the unit into place. Reconnect the USB-C cable.
  • Step 11 - Set up automations (optional): Use the app's scenes and automations to link the detector to other Shelly devices, such as triggering lights when presence is detected or turning them off after a period of inactivity. Local control is supported, so automations can run without cloud dependency.
  • Step 12 - Integrate with voice assistants (optional): Link your Shelly account to Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Home Assistant via the relevant integration in the Shelly app, and follow the prompts to expose the detector to your chosen platform.
  • Step 13 - Firmware updates: Check the app for any available firmware updates and install them to ensure the device runs the latest software with the most recent features and security patches.
