Shelly BLU TRV Radiator Valve Starter Kit Setup Guide

Shelly BLU TRV Radiator Valve Starter Kit – Setup Guide

Tools required:

  • Adjustable spanner or pipe grips (for removing the existing valve head)
  • Soft cloth (to protect radiator finish)
  • Small flat-head screwdriver (for battery compartment, if required)
  • Smartphone or tablet with Bluetooth enabled
  • Mains power socket near the Shelly BLU Gateway location

Applications required:

  • Shelly Smart Control app (available on iOS and Android)
  • A Shelly Cloud account (free registration)
  • Optional: Alexa, Google Home, or Home Assistant app for voice and automation integration

Step-by-step setup:

  • Step 1 – Unbox and check contents: Confirm the kit contains the Shelly BLU TRV valve, Shelly BLU Gateway, 2x AA batteries, valve adapters, mounting accessories, and the quick start guide.
  • Step 2 – Install the Shelly Smart Control app: Download the Shelly Smart Control app from the App Store or Google Play. Create a Shelly Cloud account or sign in with your existing credentials. Allow the app permissions for Bluetooth and Location (required for BLE device discovery).
  • Step 3 – Set up the Shelly BLU Gateway: Plug the Shelly BLU Gateway into a USB power source (such as a mains USB adapter) within Bluetooth range of where the TRV will be installed and within Wi-Fi range of your router. Wait for the device's LED to indicate it is ready for pairing.
  • Step 4 – Add the Gateway to the app: In the Shelly Smart Control app, tap Add Device, then select the Shelly BLU Gateway from the list of discovered devices. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the Gateway to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network by entering your SSID and password. Assign it to a room for easier management.
  • Step 5 – Insert batteries into the TRV: Open the battery compartment on the Shelly BLU TRV and insert the supplied 2x AA batteries, observing the correct polarity. The valve should power on and enter pairing mode automatically.
  • Step 6 – Remove the existing radiator valve head: Turn the existing manual valve head to the fully open position. Using an adjustable spanner or pipe grips (with a cloth to protect the finish), loosen the retaining nut or collar and unscrew the valve head from the valve body. Do not remove the valve body itself — only the head.
  • Step 7 – Select the correct adapter: The Shelly BLU TRV fits standard M30 x 1.5mm valve bodies directly. If your radiator uses a different valve type (e.g. Danfoss RA, RAV, RAVL, Caleffi, Giacomini), choose the matching adapter from the included set and fit it to the valve body.
  • Step 8 – Mount the Shelly BLU TRV: Screw the Shelly BLU TRV onto the valve body (or adapter) by hand until it is firmly seated. Avoid using tools to overtighten, as this can damage the unit. Ensure the display is positioned for easy viewing.
  • Step 9 – Pair the TRV with the Gateway: In the Shelly Smart Control app, tap Add Device again and select Bluetooth Device. The app will discover the Shelly BLU TRV. Confirm the pairing and assign it to the same room as the radiator. The TRV will automatically calibrate to the valve, which may involve audible motor movement — this is normal.
  • Step 10 – Configure temperature settings: Once paired, set your desired target temperature in the app. The valve supports a range of 5°C to 30°C in 0.5°C increments. You can create schedules for different times of day, set away modes, and group multiple TRVs by room.
  • Step 11 – Optional smart home integration: To enable voice control or wider automation, link your Shelly Cloud account to Alexa, Google Home, or Home Assistant using the integrations menu in the Shelly app. Follow the prompts in your chosen platform to import your devices.
  • Step 12 – Test operation: Set a target temperature higher than the current room temperature and confirm the valve opens (you should hear a brief motor sound). Lower the target temperature and confirm the valve closes. Check the app reports correct status and battery level.

Notes:

  • The Shelly BLU TRV uses Bluetooth Low Energy and requires the Shelly BLU Gateway (included) for remote access, cloud control, and automation outside Bluetooth range.
  • The product is battery-powered (2x AA) and does not involve mains wiring. No electrician is required for installation.
  • Ensure the radiator is cool before removing the valve head to avoid burns.
  • If your radiator valve body is seized or leaks when the head is removed, consult a qualified heating engineer before proceeding.
  • Keep the quick start guide for reference on adapter selection and troubleshooting.
