Ecowitt 7-in-1 Solar-Powered Wireless Weather Station WS90 Setup Guide

Ecowitt 7-in-1 Solar-Powered Wireless Weather Station WS90 — Setup Guide

Tools required:

  • Vertical mounting pole (25–33mm diameter)
  • Adjustable spanner or socket set for the U-bolt mounting bracket
  • Cross-head (Phillips) screwdriver
  • Spirit level to ensure the unit is mounted perfectly horizontal
  • Compass (or smartphone compass app) for correct wind direction alignment
  • Stepladder if mounting at height
  • Soft cloth for cleaning the solar panel prior to installation

Applications required:

  • Ecowitt mobile app (available for iOS and Android) for sensor pairing and configuration
  • Ecowitt gateway (e.g. GW2000 or GW1100, sold separately) to receive sensor data
  • Optional: Weather Underground account for online data sharing
  • Optional: smart home platform of choice for automation integration (compatibility not specified)
  • Active 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for the paired gateway

Step-by-step setup:

  • Unbox and inspect: Carefully remove the WS90 sensor unit, mounting bracket, U-bolts, and quick start guide. Check all components are present and undamaged.
  • Charge the internal battery: Before installation, place the WS90 in direct sunlight for several hours to allow the integrated solar panel to charge the internal rechargeable battery. This ensures reliable first-time operation.
  • Set up the Ecowitt gateway first: If you have not already done so, install your Ecowitt gateway (GW2000 or GW1100) indoors. Plug it into a USB power source, download the Ecowitt app, create an account, and follow the in-app instructions to connect the gateway to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • Power on the WS90: Open the battery compartment on the underside of the unit and insert the supplied battery (or activate it per the quick start guide). Confirm the LED indicator briefly illuminates to confirm power-on.
  • Pair the sensor: With the gateway powered and connected, open the Ecowitt app and navigate to the sensor list. The WS90 transmits on 868MHz and should be detected automatically within a few minutes. Verify that temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, light, and UV readings appear in the app.
  • Test wireless range: Whilst still indoors, hold the WS90 near the intended mounting location and confirm a stable signal is received by the gateway. The maximum range is up to 100 metres line-of-sight; walls, metal structures, and dense foliage will reduce this.
  • Choose a suitable mounting location: Select an open outdoor location free from overhanging trees, buildings, or other obstructions that could interfere with wind, rainfall, light, or UV measurements. Ideally, the unit should sit at least 1.5 metres above any nearby surface and several metres clear of tall objects.
  • Attach the mounting bracket: Fit the supplied U-bolts and bracket to your vertical pole (25–33mm diameter). Tighten the nuts evenly with a spanner so the bracket is secure but not over-torqued.
  • Mount the WS90: Slide the WS90 onto the bracket and secure it according to the quick start guide. Use a spirit level to ensure the unit is perfectly level — this is essential for accurate rainfall and wind measurement.
  • Align to true north: Using a compass, rotate the unit so that the north indicator marked on the housing points to true north. Correct orientation is critical for accurate wind direction readings.
  • Confirm solar panel exposure: Ensure the integrated solar panel has unobstructed exposure to daylight throughout the day to maintain continuous charging of the internal battery.
  • Verify live data: Return indoors and open the Ecowitt app. Check that all seven measurements — temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, light intensity, and UV — are updating correctly.
  • Calibrate if required: Within the Ecowitt app, you may apply offsets for temperature, humidity, wind, and rainfall to fine-tune readings against a known reference. This is optional but recommended for best accuracy.
  • Configure data sharing (optional): In the app, enable upload to Weather Underground, Ecowitt.net, or other supported services by entering the relevant station credentials.
  • Smart home integration (optional): If you wish to use the data for home automation, configure the gateway's integration options in the Ecowitt app. Specific platform compatibility is not specified — consult the latest Ecowitt documentation.
  • Ongoing checks: Periodically inspect the unit to ensure the solar panel and rain funnel remain clean and free from debris, leaves, or insect nests. The WS90 is IP66 rated and designed for year-round outdoor use across an operating range of -40°C to +60°C.

Note: The WS90 is a low-voltage, solar-powered device and does not require mains electrical work. No electrician is required for installation. If mounting at height, follow safe working-at-height practices and use appropriate access equipment.
